Unity

Re:Verse reading–Philippians 2:1-11 (day two) Make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. Vs. 2

It is one of the questions that comes up frequently to the leadership of FBCSA, and it is also a central theme of our new paradigm. Individuals with much institutional memory remember the days when the church was less complex in structure and they long for us to be “united” again. It sounds good, doesn’t it? Everyone in the same place, experiencing the same thing at the same time. Yes, indeed, but that doesn’t paint a very accurate picture of our body. We are diverse, with different needs, languages, and experiences. We are large and small, young and old, but we are united.

Being united, does not mean all the same. What unites us is our love of scripture and our commitment to Re:Verse. Our staff and leadership are united in common purpose to reach and disciple. Our resources are all channeled to a single model. We are more united than many realize. It may not look like it did, but it sure feels like we understand this scripture.

  1. Philippians 2:2~”Make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose.” is the driver for Christian unity. This is the type of unity we want as Christians for Christ’s sakes.

Unity, in general, can be bad or good. The question for us, Brothers and Sisters in Christ, is what model of unity we are to follow to reveive God’s approval. Philippians 2:2 is the unity model for Christians. This verse has no ambiguity.

Here is my take from this verse in terms of principles: 1) we strive to seek to be led by the Spirit and to bear the fruits of the Spirit, 2) we strive to know Christ personally and spread the truth about Jesus-his life, his death and his resurrection, 3) we love one another as Brothers and Sisters in Christ and also love others the ways Jesus Christ led and taught us, 4) we serve Him by continuing to serve His mission and by following His examples of love!

God created a diversity in personality, race, sex, color, nationality, and so on for His own purpose and glory. He created us in His own image. Diversity is the strengths, not weaknesses as it helps us see the world we live in with different perspectives. God’s diversity for the earth will stay. The church’s mission will stay until Jesus Christ returns. Philippians 2:2 is a unity model we will abide in building the church, relationship with one another and our service to God, to one another, and to others.

My favorite motto in serving, “United we stand, Divided we fall.” As a US public servant for 37 years, I uphold this motto in serving agency mission at both State and Federal level. I support diversity that God created and will stand with you, true believers, in implementing the Philippians 2:2 Unity model. Together, we walk in unity for Christ! This is the good and the right type of unity! Count me in!!
